Here to solve all your problems in life, three of the most beloved Shanghai born food start-ups — Spread the Bagel, Cinnaswirl, and Strictly Cookies — have Voltron'ed and are now available under one roof in one location on Yuyuan Lu. The team of professional old-school New York bagel makers is now baking up those classic cookies and cinnamon buns as well.
Hey, that's just super convenient!

First starting in 2010, the Spread the Bagel team has been slinging artisanal, authentic, New York-style bagels to the masses for over a decade now, and have lately added two of Shanghai’s own most popular dessert brands, Cinnaswirl and Strictly Cookies to the menu. They're basically covering all the most important and essential food groups — you never have to eat anything else ever for life.
For Spread the Bagel’s part, the move to include these two Shanghai-famous brands comes as part of the team's renewed passion and excitement for serving Shanghai and “spreading the goodness” after Covid lockdown measures. The dedication to quality on the menu has been consistent throughout good times and bad, and the idea to include Cinnaswirl and Strictly Cookies — two of Shanghai’s most fanatically sought-after dessert treats — is a way for the team to make things even better.

Spread the Bagel is located on Yuyuan Lu in a cute and approachable little one-room deli / restaurant, just off the street. They’ve got a few tables inside for dine-in customers and some outdoor seating for open-air bagel and coffee consumption.

4.
It's a chill, friendly, and cozy kind of place. A little bit hip and with lots of personality -- a nice little respite from the scooters zooming by on Yuyuan Lu.

5.
Everything from the bagels, to the buns to the cookies are freshly made on-site. It’s kinda like hanging out in your friend's kitchen, if your friend was also a really good baker. A fresh tray of buns coming out of the oven here... hey!

6.
Mmmm... fresh cookies!

Coming back after Covid, Spread the Bagel has amped up their menu, with tons of delicious new stuff. SmartShanghai went on a deep dive in the food offerings, resampling their best selling bagel sandwiches and trying out the new goodness.

Starting off with the classic: Spread the Bagel’s New York Ruben — probably their bestseller. An authentic New York style reuben sandwich with brined beef brisket, sauerkraut, Emmental and Russian dressing — 68rmb. So good.
Starting from today, for five days only (until May 12), the New York Ruben is 50% off when ordered through Spread The Bagel's MiniProgram (link below) and at their shop.

One for the vegetarians — the Z-Rou Chopped Cheese. Seasonal Z-Rou plant-based “meat” topped with cabbage, pickles, American cheese and Szechuan aioli for some kick. 60rmb.
-
10.
Another really popular one — the Foxy Loxy. House-cured salmon with red onion, dill, lemon juice, and stacked with tons of cream cheese. A lighter but still really filling salmon sandwich. 65rmb.

For something a little different, the menu also has a range of pizza bagels if you’re looking for maximum melted cheese…

And now, for the first time in their history, Spread the Bagel is moving into sandwich terrain with a line of San Francisco-style sourdough bread sandwiches. They’ve got five variations in sourdough sandos, including an all-day breakfast variation, a veggie option, beef, and salmon. This is the Pizzazz Mr. Zhou - 65rmb. Really good sourdough bread!

For drinks, don't miss out on their hand-made sodas. They've got three different kinds but our favorite is the Rasberry Lime Ricky for 28rmb.
Other drink option include fresh juice, tea, and lots of coffee -- Americanos for 20rmb. For booze, try out the Sangria.
Spread the Bagel also hosts a nice and long daily happy hour from when they open at 7:30am to 7pm. It's basically always happy hour in there.

The cinnamon rolls. Hot damn. Super delicious! Like, crazy delicious! Spread the Bagel has the variations Cinnaswirl is known for, including the Classic, Cinnamon Raisin, Walnut, Caramel Pecan, and Mini. They're available from 18rmb to 148rmb for a dozen.

For something different, try their Caramel Apple cinnamon bun, just dripping with caramel sauce for 22rmb. The caramel sauce is so, so good!
You need to get your face into this, seriously!

If you've got a Strictly Cookies-sized hole in your heart, you should hit up Spread the Bagel, 'cause they've got all the Strictly Cookies favorites from 18rmb, including the Chocolate Chip, the Oatmeal Raisin, the Gingerblast, and more.
This is a new one we'd never tried before Go Nuts, a glutten free cookie. Thumbs way up!

This is the Skinny Chocolate Chip Cookie, which is the classic Strictly Cookie's American style chocolate chip cookie, made with less sugar for people watching their diets.
-

But pffffthhh to diets because this is the classic Strictly Cookies Chocolate Chip Cookie. This thing explodes with so much chocolate when you break it in half. Crazy delicious.
Strictly Cookies are also available at partner indie cafes and venues around Shanghai, including Nana Coffee, Slab Town, Cafeonair, Guay, jazo, Avocado Lady, and Cafe de Volcan.
Basically, wherever you're on the go getting your coffee, check for that Strictly Cookies logo and pick yourself up a treat as well.

People are dropping by to pick up their weekly supply of bagels, and they’ve also other snacks for customers on the go, like their super popular bagel chips.

There's also lots of flash deals, seasonal menu variations, and special offers available over the Spread the Bagel WeChat platform. You'll want to get on that!
