About

Shubhiji Rao, a Singaporean-Indian artist and writer, explores the identity in her inaugural solo exhibition in China. Over a decade, Rao has undertaken a project spanning films, books, paintings, photography, etchings, and installations crafted from discarded materials and documents. Her approach delves into contemporary and historical concerns, tackling issues like migration and dislocation, encompassing aspects of ethnicity, language, culture, and knowledge, offering diverse perspectives. Her works, characterized by their poetic, profound, and humorous nature, critique problematic narratives of civilization and Western knowledge systems. This exhibition will showcase a series of new pieces, including a feature-length film of the same title commissioned by the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai and a towering 12-meter installation.
